City Council 7/26 Amendment to current Ordinance requiring euthanasia of Vicious Dogs by Breed not Deed
Smokey
You cannot change the laws by being non-compliant, if you want changes then you must do this correctly, this case is NOT about changing the current Vicious Dog classification, it is an amendment to allow dogs Vicious by Breed a chance at rehoming when their owners have been non-compliant with the law!
Being irresponsible such as Smokey’s owners were does not get the ordinance changed, it never will. The ordinance is clear, these people clearly violated city law! The meeting tomorrow is not to change the law, but to amend the ordinance, it is to save dogs that face euthanasia secondary to owner irresponsibility. Smokey’s case brought this to the attention of the City Officials.
The ARL has offered to evaluate the dogs and offer them for adoption if they are stable. The ARL is NOT animal control they are contracted by the city to house the dogs and try to find them homes. Animal Control falls under the DMPD! Please educate yourself on facts and not rumors.
If a dog considered vicious by breed not deed and is not protected by their owners being compliant with the law, they face DEATH, as owners it is OUR responsibility to comply with the laws and save our dogs from DEATH due current antiquated laws. It is also our responsibility to show the city we are responsible, we take care of our dogs, we comply with the laws and want them changed, we must hold irresponsible owners accountable, stiffer fines and when owners do not comply they should not own a dog, especially a dog that falls under the current vicious by breed ordinance. All dogs must be current with rabies vaccines, current with licenses, and in the case of Vicious classifications must carry liability insurance, and keep the dog confined per ordinance regulations. If you don’t know these laws they are available online or posted on our website www.adapt4dsm.org
When you attend a city council meeting be polite, respectful and reasonable. If you aren’t you will blow the chances of this ordinance being amended and dogs will continue to die at the hands of irresponsible owners!! Smokey’s owners were well aware of the laws and knew that Smokey was not allowed in DSM, unfortunately their lack of responsibility may cause this dog to lose his life. He will not go back to them, but if we can convince the Council to amend this ordinance we may be able to save his life!
I urge all of you to fight for Smokey’s life, and the many other dogs who face DEATH when they have done nothing wrong. The meeting is to amend the ordinance, your actions will influence the votes by Council, we must have 6 out of 7 yes votes. If you are attending and you will speak ask only that they support this amendment and allow dogs the chance.
We will address the repealing of the ordinance at another time, this is NOT the time. We have to prove ourselves to the City, we can and will do this, the meeting Monday is not the time.
Thinking About Breeding?? Every year over 6 MILLION animals are euthanized in shelters for lack of available homes. Approx. 135,000 per week = 20,000 every 24 hours, 365 days a year! An animal is euthanized in the U.S. EVERY 2 SECONDS. – American Humane Assoc.

Get involved. Don’t buy from newspaper ads, Craig’s List, Pet Shops. Reputable breeders do not use these to sell their dogs. Please Adopt from the ARL or a reputable rescue if you want a pet.
