Topeka, KS repeals BSL

Recently Topeka, KS and Toledo, OH have repealed their 30 year old dog ordinances which were breed specific.  This is happening more and more throughout the country, the time to act is now, not when the city decides to restrict certain breeds OR propose another ban. ADAPT4DSM is asking for your help in getting signatures.

The petition must be signed by a registered voter.  (Voter Registration form can be printed below.) Please use separate sheets for those who reside in Des Moines, and those who live outside the city limits.  Our goal is 5,000 signatures within the next 3 months., that is a number the City Council can NOT ignore.  Also the City will NOT accept online petitions so we must have signatures, an online petition will not be done!

Current ordinances are discriminatory, ineffective, unenforceable ,and do not protect the citizens of Des Moines as evidenced by current bite statistics, as of 10/01/2010, there have been 496 Des Moines bites (2009/2010), 14% are pit bull related. We are asking that members from ADAPT4DSM, the ARL , and a professional trainer; affiliated with the ARL or selected by the public be involved consistently in this process. Previously only one workshop took place, there was no change in the current ordinance and no further communication with the public. Significant research, documentation, and support by major organizations document/support the findings that BSL is ineffective.

From 1/1/09 – 10/1/10 there were 496 reported dog bites in the city of Des Moines, only 14% were labeled as pit bulls or pit bull mixes, yet this breed is labeled vicious??? What about the other 86%? The 2 documented dog-related deaths in the State of  Iowa were not pit bulls.

We want BSL language removed, owners held accountable, and stiffer fines for those who abuse/neglect their dogs.

So, are you willing to help?

Thinking About Breeding??

Every year over 6 MILLION animals are euthanized in shelters for lack of available homes. Approx. 135,000 per week = 20,000 every 24 hours, 365 days a year! An animal is euthanized in the U.S. EVERY 2 SECONDS. – American Humane Assoc.

Get involved. Don’t buy from newspaper ads, Craig’s List, Pet Shops. Reputable breeders do not use these to sell their dogs. Please Adopt from the ARL or a reputable rescue if you want a pet.

All Dogs All People Together for Des Moines (ADAPT4DSM):

Diverse citizens promoting owner responsibility, supporting community education, and helping shift the focus from breed-specific bans to alternative vicious dog legislations within the greater Des Moines, Iowa area.

Thank you for visiting our site. We are a volunteer citizen’s animal education group whose goals are to reduce the number of biting incidents, remove problematic dogs quicker, holding owners responsible, increase the compliance of current dog regulations to generate money for the city, and provide educational programs for safety and responsible dog ownership for all citizens. We want Des Moines to become a NATIONAL model city for dog ownership, a win-win situation for responsible dog owners and the city of Des Moines.

Make sure you visit all the pages on this site, there is a wealth of information as well as our history which documents how hard we have been working to stop the breed specific legislation, working with the city to develop ordinances that are enforceable.  This has been accomplished through the efforts of volunteers, a win-win program for all dog owners and the city of DSM!  The calendar will post upcoming events and meetings. This site is about our right to own the breed we chose to own, to promote education for all citizens, increase public safety for ALL citizens, and hold owners responsible for their dogs.

Your membership and participation is appreciated and needed, we cannot accomplish our goals without citizen volunteers. Remember that just because the ban has been shelved “for now” we are far from eliminating breed specific regulations, get involved and stay involved!!
