  • About Us Meet the leadership team and our dogs, we all live very busy lives and voluntarily give our time to protect our dogs, and our rights to own our breed of choice.  We strongly promote responsible dog ownership, public safety, and education.  Our goal to make DSM a model city for responsible dog ownership continually drives us forward!  We can only achieve this goal with the public becoming actively involved!

History

News/Events

 

City of DSM

  • Meetings Information from city council workshops and meetings.  This will also include any meeting that the leaders of adapt4dsm.org participate in with public servants in the city of Des Moines.
  • Mayor/City Council Member Contact information for city leaders, it’s important that these leaders know how you feel about your rights as a responsible dog owner.  Know who your ward representative is and let him/her know you cannot support anyone who supports BSL, voters are important!
  • Ward Map Do you know which Ward you live in?  Find out on this map!
  • Animal Control City DSM Supervised by a sergeant in the DMPD.  This officer is the person who recommends to the city manager whether a dog is dangerous/vicious.  The ARL is contracted by the city to maintain animal control facilities.  See page for more descriptions of the responsibilites for animal control.

Our Plan

  • Neighborhood Associations As a group we must get in front of the neighborhood association leaders and explain how we hope to involve the public in accomplishing our goals and improving safety in their neighborhoods.  Only by working together can we succeed in making DSM a model city.
  • SafeKids/SafeDogs Model by Karen Peak The educational model we would like to use, we are going to propose to the DSM school board that dog safety become a mandatory educational program in the schools starting at the elementary school level.  Volunteers would be trained to present this program so we are training consistently with the same message.
  • Calagary Animal Control Model Calgary has one of the most, if not the most effective and responsible dog ownership programs in North America.  We are proposing that we model our program after Calgary’s.
  • HSUS Anti-Dog Fighting Campaign HSUS has a very powerful and successful anti-dogfighting program, we have volunteers willing to work in our inner-city areas, or problem areas to train people about the evils of dog fighting, responsible ownership, and irresponsible breeding.  Our goal is to bring juveniles in to assist with the program and become a positive role model for their neighborhoods.

  • Public-Professional Refer everyone you know who believes in “Responsible” dog ownership for all breeds!
  • Professional Supporters Talk to everyone you know, professionals who support us are important to the city of DSM.  Talk to your vet, ask if they are interested in educating the public, Bo’s vet is very interested in educating school children on a volunteer basis!  Interested business owners will get their business logo and description posted on our site for free.
  • Volunteer Base Our members and where they are willing to help.
